4 Main Classifications of Burn Injuries

Burn injuries may be caused by construction site accidents, traffic collisions, and other types of incidents. Exposure to scalding liquids, harsh chemicals, flames, and hot objects may cause a serious burn injury, and you may be left with permanent scarring and disfigurement, which can hinder your quality of life. If you have suffered a burn injury because of someone else’s negligence, you have the right to pursue compensation in a personal injury lawsuit. We will guide you through the process as you seek justice from those responsible.

There Are 4 Main Classifications of Burn Injuries:

1. First-Degree Burns

First-degree burn injuries are the least severe. They affect only the outer layer of skin, known as the epidermis. The affected area may appear red and slightly swollen, but it will often heal quickly with no medical treatment.

2. Second-Degree Burns

Second-degree burn injuries affect the epidermis, as well as the second layer of skin, known as the dermis. The affected area may appear red and swollen with blisters. Although second-degree burns usually heal with little medical treatment, scars from blisters may form.

3. Third-Degree Burns

Third-degree burn injuries are more severe. They affect both layers of skin, as well as the layer of fat beneath the skin, known as the adipose tissue. The burnt area may appear waxy, leathery, and white or tan, and the victim may feel no pain because of nerve damage. These injuries are severe, and require prompt medical treatment. Permanent scarring and disfigurement may occur.

4. Fourth-Degree Burns

Fourth-degree burn injuries are the most severe. These burns affect both layers of skin, the adipose tissue, and the bones, soft tissues, and muscles. They may even cause organ damage, depending on the severity. The affected area may be completely charred or blackened, and the skin may be totally burned away. Victims may feel no pain due to nerve damage. Fourth-degree burns may cause permanent disfigurement, loss of limbs, scarring, nerve damage, psychological issues, and even death if not treated.
